First, make sure you read the three awesome gifts I received in Hawkeye & Elementary fandoms. Because even if they hadn't been written for me, I would have recced them.

Anne of Green Gables

What the water sprites saw (Anne Shirley/Gilbert Blythe | Teen and Up | 1708 )
Summary: It is said that if two lovers lie together by a brook such as this, their child will be beloved of the naiads and never die of drowning.
Why you should read it: One of the disappointments to me in the book series is that Anne and Gilbert's marriage seems to lack the kind of warmth and passion I always thought it should have. This fic restores those things, and does so without ever sounding out of character.

DC Related Fandoms:

If You Keep Me Next to You (Kate Kane/Renee Montoya | Teen and Up | 3392 words )
Summary: Women in uniforms were her kryptonite.
Why you should read it: The author does a really great job characterizing Kate and Renee. I feel like far too many Kate/Renee fics put all the sympathy on Renee and make Kate out to be a Big Bad Meanie, but this does well and fair by both of them.

The Story So Far (10 Years Later) (Steph/Dick, Babs/Wendy | General Audiences | 2198 words)
Summary: The batfamily is really hard to keep track of. And ten years after Stephanie Brown becomes Batgirl it's even MORE complicated. Good thing there's still someone around to draw pictures and tell the story...
Why you should read it: Awww, I am a sucker for future!fic, and this manages to incorporate Dick/Steph and Carrie. It has a lot of clever canon references. Plus Nightwing!Steph and Batgirl!Nell.

The Thrill Can Kill (Steph/Dick | Mature | 2663 words)
Summary: Steph's used to Batman suddenly appearing in her bedroom.
Why you should read it: This was written so well that it feels like it could be taken from a page of the comics. Steph's voice is particularly well done.

Vigilante, Save Thyself (Arrow | John Diggle, Oliver Queen | Gen | G | 832 words)
Summary: Nobody expects you to come back from something like that and be Little Miss Mary Sunshine, but I don't think you came back at all.
Why you should read: When I'm reading gen, I am pretty demanding in my need for it to sound like the source material, and this really does! Ollie and Dig's interaction is spot on here, and Diggle in particular is greatly portrayed.

Wibbly Wobbly Universe (Batgirl & the Doctor #1)  (Batgirl/Doctor Who Crossover | Steph, Eleven, Dick, Bruce | Gen | 2342 words)
Summary:“You not existing is a major screw-up on the part of the universe, Stephanie Brown,” the Doctor says.
Why you should read: I am ... really hesitant in reading DCU fic these days, BUT OH MY GOD. This takes place in the DCnU, and explains Steph's absence very well. It tugged on my heart in all the right ways.

The Case of the Amazon Wishlist  (Elementary | Joan & Sherlock | Gen | 554 words)
Summary: Holmes sets out to discover what will best irritate his father; Watson helps.
why you should read it: The summary says it all. This is a fun, clever story that captures their voices well, is humorous, and shows that Joan Watson is badass.

Marvel Related Fandoms

Action Hero Figures and Ham Sandwiches (Peter Parker/Flash Thompson | General Audiences | 2509 words)
Summary:When Peter and Flash met, they almost bonded. Until the moment Flash said something stupid.
Why you should read it: This does a great job of making a friendship (and more) a likely and believable premise.

An April Girl (Kate/Cassie | General Audiences | 5813 words)
Summary: Kate takes twenty four hours away from Hawkeye & Hawkeye for reasons.
Why you should read it: Welp, this made me cry. It fits Cassie's death into current Hawkeye canon perfectly.

Being Open  (Marvel 616 | Steve Rogers/Carol Danvers | Explicit | 1349 words)
Summary: Carol only has one true love but Steve is more accepting than she thought he'd be.
Why you should read it: Steve/Carol being friends with benefits! "She felt her mouth starting to break into a smile. "It's not a series of affairs, Captain. One long affair with the wide-blue sky; we just invite in other partners occasionally." In which Steve is not stupid and Carol gets great sex because of it.

a spring fling (Chris Evans/Scarlett Johansson, casual guest appearances by everyone involved in making Captain America 2 & Thor | Mature | 5707 words)
Summary: New York City, where every weekend is marathons of Halo and the coming of the Thor baby.
Why you should read it: You should read this because it is hilarious. Also, because these people feel real and are totally the people you want to live with and have intense bad decisions with.

PEOPLE! MY FAVORITE TIME OF THE YEAR HAS ARRIVED : [livejournal.com profile] queer_fest prompting has begun!  Rules Post | Prompting Post It's multifandom, of course. Go forth and prompt!

Also: February Fic Round-Up:

Four Sam Wilson Smut Drabbles (Sam/Steve, Sam/Steve/Bucky, Sam/Clint, Sam/Steve/Sharon/Natasha/Bucky | Mature | 400 words )

50 Sentences About Bucky's Road Trip (Bucky/Nick Fury/Natasha Romanova | Mature | 1527 words) Bucky's relationships with everyone are complicated.

By Any Other Name (Bucky/Steve | Mature | 797 words) Alone in the 21st century, Steve found comfort through the memories of orphanage fantasies, back alley confessions, and the sigh of his name on Bucky's lips.

What Once Had Been a Breeze (Aang/Katara | PG-13 | 371 words) He's not the Aang that he used to be, but Katara still loves him.

Properly Wrap (Barbara/Steph | PG-13 | 1009 words) Stephanie already has a mother.

Things which are neat and new:

1. Porn Battle is accepting prompts! Prompt Post on LJ | Prompt Post on DW

2. [livejournal.com profile] bucky_kink has started. It's a kink meme for Bucky Barnes, and apparently accepts any version of him. It's kind of small so far, but looks promising. More Bucky fic can never be a bad thing! Kinky Post | Fluffy Post
zarabithia: (Jaime: adorable)
Ugh, I really need to change my LJ name, because that title is annoying.

1. I finally got around to watching Thor. That movie is, imo, pretty perfect. The women are great, the men are great, the villain is bad but not cartoonishly so. And Thor is pretty great, as he should be.

2. I've been reading a lot of Thor fanfic. Every time I do, I run across a characterization that makes me think of when Q asked Worf if he'd eaten any good books lately. A Visual Representation )

I'm not really sure where this characterization comes from. Thor may never go toe to toe with Tony, Reed or Hank in the brains department, but he's a clever guy. A passing familiarity with the comics proves that ... as does the fact that he was intelligent enough to explain how the universe works to Jane in the film.

Idk, "Thor as a big, dumb ogre" doesn't really work for me.

3. Also, tl;dr: thoughts on mythology and comics canon )

4. I've also been nostalgic for Star Trek Voyager lately. I was in junior high/high school when it was on, and I read a lot of Paris/Kim and Paris/Torres, and OT3 fic. A debate on TrekBBS made me all nostalgic for it ... and I have spent the past two days going back and forth between Thor fic and Voyager fic. And I have more thoughts under the cut )

5. In fairness, I am writing the worst fic in the world. It's Avengers fandom, and the pairing is cracky, even for me. But I am okay with that.

6. I continue to love most things about DC reboot and still prefer it to all the shitty old canon. Jaime's book is still terrible, though. Brenda cries so much that feels like she is being written by Brubaker. I keep looking for Fake!Captain Americas to pop up out of nowhere for Jaime to fight.

7. Ohio sucks. Snow sucks.

8. Pimps: [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen is currently ongoing and [livejournal.com profile] queer_fest confirmed that it is starting in March. Good things!
zarabithia: (holiday: christmas: diana yuletide)
Happy Day After Yuletide Opening/Early New Years!

So I was spoiled for Yuletide and received two very wonderful presents:

Christmastime in the City (596 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Captain America (2011)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers
Characters: James "Bucky" Barnes, Steve Rogers
Summary: Bucky and Steve on the streets of New York, Christmas 1940.

STEVE. BUCKY. STEVE/BUCKY. The way the writer captured the feel of the period and the special push/pull of Steve/Bucky in the movie verse is perfect. It's such a warm, fun story and I adore it to pieces.

Welcome Home (1264 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Young Avengers
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Kate Bishop/Cassie Lang
Characters: Scott Lang, Cassie Lang, Kate Bishop, Clint Barton
Summary: In the aftermath of Scott's return, he and Cassie deal with the fallout. With a little help from their friends.

SOMEONE WHO ISN'T ME WROTE SCOTT FIC. :) :) :) AND CASSIE FIC. And it's a Yuletide Fic without a hint of Billy/Teddy! (I am beginning to think the predictions are true and that the world is going to end in 2012. :) ) But in seriousness, the voices in this fic make me happy. Scott is his lovable dork self, Clint is going to help you out even if it gets himself arrested, Kate is a wonderful anchor to the people she loves and Cassie continues to do the struggling to grow up that makes her a delight to read about. I <3 everyone in this story, as I should in a well-written Avengers story.

Annual Yuletide Game time:

I wrote 5 stories for Yuletide this year. If you can guess them, you win a ficlet/drabble of your choice. I would say that two of them are obviously mine, two of them less so, and one I doubt anyone will guess.

Comments are screened in case you want to guess!
zarabithia: (avengers)

Two quick recs:

Just Temporary, Ma'am | Thor | Darcy Lewis/Clint Barton | R
Summary: In which Darcy procures a fake boyfriend in order to get Jane off her tits about this "Darcy doesn't have any friends" thing. Which is ridiculous, Darcy has over 300 friends.
Why You Should Read: This is fucking hilarious, and I literally laughed out loud several times.

To Have and To Hold | Captain America: The First Avenger | Steve/Bucky | PG-13
Summary: The little moments where one fell deeper in love with the other
Why You Should Read: It's so very much them, and it will break your heart and make you glad about it.

30 Day Fanfic Meme, Day 3:

Day 11 - Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?

I basically prefer pwp, slices of life, and future fic. I don't like writing long plotty things, and I don't like writing action or adventure or mystery. So I tend to stick with my slices of life, and if I can set them in the future, it's all good. I like het/gen/male slash/female slash, and I write a little bit of all of it.  If I write too much male slash or too much het, I feel like I'm in a rut and I consciously break away to write something else.

Day 12 - Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" fic of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom? I do this with Buffy a lot - in fact, my Star Trek Big Bang is an "adaptation" of Buffy in the Trek universe (no, none of the men are slayers, because that is my biggest pet peeve in the world.)

Day 13 - Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?Wordy Pervy is Wordy )

Day 14 - Ratings – how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead? I like all sorts of ratings - from G to NC-17. I'm not really very fussy about it. Most of my stuff falls right in the middle.

Some days, you need some nice, porny Uhura/McCoy/Kirk fucking in a cave. Otherdays, you  need Dick and Lian taking Lian on her first patrol. I think fanfic would be very boring if I only wrote one of the two all the time.

Day 15 - Warnings – What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic? Wordy Pervy is Wordy Again )
zarabithia: (young avengers: cassie yay!)
Dear Flist, you have probably seen this already, because I have been pimping this all over creation this morning (my least favorite part of running a fest, let me show you it!) But in case you haven't, have one more pimp:

Hey! Another awesome cause: help_nz. I'm not going to be participating, because my time is severely limited in the next couple of months, but most of the stuff you guys like that I wrote was co-written by the fabulous [personal profile] cero_ate anyway. Since she's offering fics in the lightning round, I figured I'd pimp her for you:

User name
: [livejournal.com profile] cero_ate
Email: s.mckny at gmail.com
Examples of my work: Here [livejournal.com profile] cero_ate or Co-written verses here
What I'm offering: 5 fics of at least 300 words and probably more, requests for new or established verses. (including ones with cowriter [livejournal.com profile] pervyficgirl )(although she won't be helping write these she has given me permission to use our combined 'verses) to the first five bidders
Starting bid: $3
Fandoms: Red, White Collar, DC comics, Marvel Avengers comics, Star Trek XI, Young Justice cartoon

Her bid link is here.

I'll sneakily point out that this is your chance if you want more Spaghetti, more Masters and Slaves verse or more in the Jason meets the YJ verse, or whatever. Or more Robins of Gotham, which I had no hand in, but was quite awesome. :)

zarabithia: (ncis: and then they died)

So, I am sick. There's a certain .... interesting quality to having a broken leg and having bronchitis at the same time. And by interesting, I mean terrible.  It's certainly not the end of the world, and other people have far more pressing challenges every day... but ick.

Anyway, between bouts of exhaustion, I am lying around, drinking hot tea and soup, and watching ridiculous nonsense on TV.

But mostly, I am reading ridiculous hurt/comfort fanfics. I am mostly reading them on delicious, but delicious keeps freezing and/or otherwise behaving badly.

So, recs for nice, long, hurt comfort? It can totally be the psychological kind or the physical kind. Something where someone is feeling unloved and mistreated and then they find out that they are actually adored totally counts too. I just read an adorable Smallville!KonthinksTimonlyloveshimsohecanspyonKonforBatman and oh, man. It was awesome. I also read a Steve/Tony sex pollen with yearning and longing, and oh, man. Hit just the right spot.

Basically, I want fictional people feeling shitty and then being made to feel better. My only real requirement is that the fandoms be ones I'm familiar with. Y'all should know which fandoms tickle my fancy by now. Hit me with your best, plz? Self-pimping is absolutely okay.

Quick pimp: [community profile] genretwisting I signed up for this, despite having no real time to do so! It looks kind of awesome.

Quick bit of awesome: Long about the time that Bruce Wayne died, Tim Drake and I had a little falling out. You may have noticed a lack of Timmy in Pervy land. Many people have tried to rekindle my Tim love, with zilch results. But today I read two fics with AWESOME Tim Drake, and my love has been rekindled. *hearts* WELCOME BACK, TIMMY. I HAVE MISSED YOU.

Quick weirdness: Have been reading [livejournal.com profile] disney_kink meme. I am torn between :) and :( and !!!! .... The porn. I kind of needs it. ?!:(

Quick reactions to White Collar, as sent in email to [livejournal.com profile] cero_ate during the show:

Dear LJ and Tumblr: You are actually supposed to be better at queer stuff than real life. Stop failing at it, plz. *sigh.*

Two things that are awesome that have nothing to do with me, before I navel gaze: on DW there is a [community profile] notgreenorblue fic/art fest that is to celebrate characters of color in comics. Its name is apparently mocking Ian Sattler's ridiculous comments earlier last year, which is pretty awesome.

On LJ: [livejournal.com profile] yj_anon_meme is an anon meme for the YJ animated series and [livejournal.com profile] new_justice is a community for the fandom in general. :) Please have a fandom, animated YJ.

And now, back to me. :) Navel-gazing, ahoy!

1.  So, the lgbtfest fic that I have been working on for three weeks has surpassed 7000 words. There is finally an end in sight, but it's still a terribly long fic that I'm not entirely sure works? I mean, it works in my head, and it works in my beta's head, but I'm not sure if it will connect in anyone else's mind (because my beta, of course, has been listening to me bitch about it for three weeks now.)

Part of the reason that I'm so nervous about it is because that it frankly says things about the biphobia and homophobia that have cropped up in unexpected places (namely, people and communities I read often) in the past month or so...and I don't feel badly about that, because that's part of the purpose of having a community like lgbtfest. But still.

Also, it's 7000 words of present tense. About a minor, rare-ish pairing. With lots of unhappy and miserable. So... lol, no one is going to read this fic. Which is okay! But amusing. Because this is the longest I have ever spent on any fic ever.

2.  A thing of note: I really like this blog post about Barbara Gordon & some of the ableism rhetoric that gets tossed around when discussing why it is "TERRIBLE" that she hasn't regained her ability to walk. There is, of course, major fail in the comments. Here's a clue: if you have to start your comment with "I don't want to sound like a major dick here, but I probably will," it's a safe bet you are a grade A dick.

3. Another thing of note: over on dreamwidth, they are having a Racebending Revenge Ficathon. Mission Statement: "Re-write one or more white characters in the fandom(s) of your choice as chromatic/non-white/PoC, in a story of at least 500 words, with some acknowledgment of how the racial difference would make a difference to the story being told."

4. Despite the fact that I have fics to write for people, fics to write for kink_bingo and am not quite finished with my lgbtfest fic of doom, I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo. Because I have no concept of time management. Here's my card:

Choosing will be the difficult part )

If any of the prompts scream a particular pairing/threesome/moresome, feel free to offer a suggestion. I can't promise anything, but I might be able to work something in. :)
zarabithia: (mary sue)
I am working on fics I owe you, promise! And some ficlets for the Merry Month of Masturbation, too! :) But since my schedule's been so hectic, I will give you two more recs by people who've had real things to write. *G*

First up, another lgbtfest fic:
[Aladdin] My Very Existence is a Monument, G by elishabet
Prompt: 84. Aladdin, Aladdin(/Jasmine), living on the streets meant Aladdin was used to making his own rules, but his embarkment on a relationship with Jasmine means that it's suddenly an issue that he was born in a female body.
Summary: Aladdin's just trying to live his life, as best as he knows. FtM Aladdin.
Why you should read it: There's no magical "fix" to Aladdin's struggle to define himself. The real reason I love the story is the way the first part begins and the way the last part ends, but I can't explain it any greater than that, lest I ruin the story. The story also manages to keep with canon, which is an awesome feat, given the subject matter.

Secondly, this meta is awesome: Only Men Are Allowed To Be Perfect: Further Thoughts On Fandom Misogyny (is multi-fandom, but mostly deals with NCIS and Doctor Who. While I don't agree with all the specific examples, the overall point is accurate, imo, and could be applied to ever so many fandom situations.)
